IDN-Hardware Sales, Inc. (formerly Hardware Sales and Supply Company) has been in business since 1925. Originally a branch of the Independent Lock Company (now known as Kaba-Ilco), Hardware Sales began as a storefront operation in a small building in downtown Detroit. Joe Falk, the founder of the company, was a pioneer in locksmith distribution. He was an influential member of the NLSA (National Locksmith Suppliers Association) and one of the founders of MMLA (Michigan Master Locksmiths Association). He led the company for almost fifty years until his death in 1974.
Hardware Sales and Supply Co. was purchased in 1977 by Milt Goldman
(the manager of Hardware Sales with his twenty-three years of
experience), and Al Hoffman and Virl Mullins, the founders of LSDA.
LSDA (Locksmith Distributors of America) began as an
international network of distributors spanning many sities throughout
North America, including Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Toronto, and
New Orleans. On January 1, 1996, LSDA officially changed its
corporate name to IDN (International Distribution Network), and
Hardware Sales and Supply became IDN-Hardware Sales, Inc. The LSDA
product line of high quality security products still carries its same
name and is the official product line for locksmith dealers of North
America.
Milt Goldman was President of Hardware Sales from 1977-1993. He led the company through the largest growth period in its history. This included three moves, from Detroit to Madison Heights to Livonia, Michigan, where the company now resides in a 15,000 square foot building at 35950 Industrial Road. Also during this period, IDN-Hardware Sales quadrupled its number of employees, added inventory and stock items, as well as its first branch in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and second branch in Ferndale, Michigan.
Milt's son, Arnie, an employee for fifteen years and formerly VP of
Operations, took over as President in October, 1993. Since then, the
company has opened branches in Buffalo and Syracuse, New York, Cleveland, Ohio,
Hartford, Connecticut, moved our Ferndale facility to Warren, Michigan, and
established a Door Division in Livonia, Michigan. In 2002, we acquired our
sister company, IDN M. Taylor in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, making it our 9th
branch location. Our tenth location, IDN Electronics, opened in August 2004.
In 2006 we opened a new location in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and merged our Warren and
Electronics locations, taking advantage of a better facility.
